Intersex Initiative is taking part in the LGBTI Health Summit 2004 in Cambridge, Mass. this week. Also participating in this conference are Cheryl Chase and Esther Morris Leidolf of Intersex Society of North America, Betsy Driver of Bodies Like Ours, along with 300+ movers and shakers of LGBTI health movement.
Intersex Initiative will be offering two groundbreaking sessions. First, "Intersex & Public Policy: Legislative Strategies and Public Health Responsibilities" discusses ways in which existing legal structures of patient protection fail in the case of intersex and how to remedy it, plus the role of public health officials in ending the shame, secrecy and isolation faced by intersex individuals and their family members.
Second, we are teaming up with Bodies Like Ours on a discussion titled "Beyond Surgery: The Future of Intersex Health Movement" which explores the future directions of intersex movement as we realize that simply stopping misguided surgeries on intersex children is not enough.
In addition, there are at least five more intersex-themed workshops throughout the conference led by other groups.
For more information about the conference, including the full list of presentations, please visit the Summit website.
