Emi, Tara and J from Intersex Initiative will attend Creating Change, the nation's largest LGBT activist conference being held this week in Miami, Florida. Below are descriptions of the two intersex-themed workshops:
Before Adding the "I": Where "Interse" Fits Into the LGBT Movement. (Saturday at 9am). The recent trend of adding the vowel ?I? to the LGBT spectrum has raised many questions about Intersex and about coalition building. This workshop will focus on what intersex means, why and when it should be added, how it fits in, what some sticking points are, and why LGBT communities should care. Participants will be given the tools and knowledge to speak about intersexuality within their own communities, and learn how intersex suggests a rethinking of categories of activism and identity. Presented by Tara Medve of Intersex Initiative and Betsy Driver and Janet Green of Bodies Like Ours.
Medical Regulation of Queer Bodies: Intersex, Disabilty, and "Gender Dysphoria" (Sunday at 9am). Thirty years after homosexuality has been de-pathologized, queer bodies and sexualities continue to be regulated by medicine. The presenters will examine heterosexist and eugenicist discourses of intersex medical "management," social "disabling" and medical regulation of unusual (i.e. "disabled") bodies, and the use of "gender identity disorder" category for trans people. In the end, we hope to argue for a social model of understanding bodies and sexualities based on self-determination, and informed consent. Presented by Emi Koyama and J Sevelius of Intersex Initiative.
In addition, we'll be handing out our materials, including 500 free 1-inch buttons designed to raise the visibility of intersex issues and Intersex Initiative at this important conference. If you are attending Creating Change, please come see us!
