August 1 edition of Ob.Gyn News reports the new finding by Dr. Sarah Creighton and her colleague Dr. Naomi Crouch regarding the risk feminizing genitoplasty (practiced to "correct" naturally large clitoris) presents to one's clitoral sensation. In this pilot review of six women aged between 17 and 31 who have had their clitoris surgically altered, all of them exhibited below-average sexual sensation in objective evaluation (using a machine to measure physical response). Not a surprising result (of course cutting on someone's clit would ruin the sensation), but nonetheless studies like this is important because some doctors insisted that the unhappy few who speak out are exceptions.
According to Crouch, who has been working with Creighton for a year, this research was part of a larger project exploring the long-term consequences of feminizing genitoplasty, but the researchers were so struck by the preliminary finding that they decided to publicize it at this stage. The finding was presented at the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology meeting earlier this year, and will be officially published early next year.
(Thanks Dr. Crouch for letting us know about this!)
