July 12 edition of the Wall Street Journal published a commentary by Alice Dreger, the author of Hermaphrodites and the Medical Invention of Sex, which addresses ethical issues involved in surgical separation of conjoined twins, and how it reflects Western ideology of individualism rather than the actual needs or interest of most people born conjoined. Her article is full of historical and contemporary examples of conjoined people who have come to accept their conjoinment as a form of individuality. Her new book on the subject, One of Us: Conjoined Twins and the Future of Normal, is forthcoming in the Spring 2004.
