Intersex Initiative Portland (ipdx) has just launched "ipdxWIRE Intersex News," the first intersex activist news source on the web that incorporates latest weblog technologies and the digital commons movement.
At first look, ipdxWIRE Intersex News may seem like a simple listing of news items related to intersexuality. Powered by the popular free application Movable Type, a "web-based personal publishing system," ipdxWIRE allows readers to post comments to each news item. In addition, it uses Movable Type's TrackBack feature to keep track of other sites using similar technologies that refer to a news item on ipdxWIRE.
Further, the contents of ipdxWIRE is syndicated as an RSS 1.0 feed, which can be viewed with a standalone RSS reader without using a web browser, or automatically incorporated into and updated within another web site. Intersex Initiative Portland allows non-commercial reproduction and modification of its news stories both online and offline by other parties under a Creative Commons license.
"As a small but growing movement, the intersex activist community relies on other people to help us spread our message," says the ipdx director Emi Koyama. "Using technologies such as TrackBack and RSS will make it easier for our friends to help spread our message, while a Creative Commons license simplifies conditions under which they can copy and modify our materials so as to remove their fears about infringing on our copyright." In fact, a supporter has already created a "syndication journal" on the popular online journal site LiveJournal, allowing other LiveJournal users to read ipdxWIRE easily on its site.
ipdx invites other intersex activists and allies to become a news contributor to ipdxWIRE, and syndicate the resulting RSS feed on their web sites. The organization also plans to release other documents on its web site under Creative Commons license in the near future.
Intersex Initiative Portland (ipdx) is a network of intersex activists and allies working to stop the medical abuse of intersex children and to challenge medical and social erasure of intersex existence through raising the awareness of issues faced by intersex people. Before founding ipdx, Koyama has worked for Intersex Society of North America as the Program Assistant. Despite its name, ipdx is not a computer peripheral covered in translucent plastic for iMacs.
