Intersex Initiative Portland (ipdx) is featured in the cover story about intersex activism in Just Out, a Portland, Oregon area bimonthly newspaper for the LGBT community. The 3,000-word article, authored by Gary Morris, was pretty good and we are very happy with it. The article is found here.
Intersex ally Francie Nevill shared with us the letter she sent to the editors of Just Out which congratulates them on publishing the wonderful article, while raising a very important point regarding representation--in particular, the use of a medical photo showing an intersex child's naked body with hir hands held down and face covered with a big black dot. Thanks Francie!
To read further about the ethical problems with the display of "freakish" bodies as anonymous and faceless, please see Alice Dreger's insightful article, "Jarring bodies: Thoughts on the display of unusual anatomies" in the Winter 2000 issue of Perspectives in Biology and Medicine.
