Hello People,
I have announcements for two upcoming events. First, on Thursday April 15, I will be on the panel with representatives from other groups in GenderCONNECTIONS event, "a community dialogue on how to end discrimination and violence caused by gender stereotypes" held by GenderPAC. The event is free and open to the public, and will be at the Native American Community Center of Portland State University (SW Broadway at Jackson) from 7-9pm. Contact Nisha or Kristin of GenderPAC at 202-462-6610 for more information.
Next, I'm coming to Colorado! I will speak at University of Colorado at Boulder on how queer and disability politics intersect in the intersex movement. The lecture is titled "Queerness and the Politics of Normal: A View from Critical Disability Studies" and will be held at Ramaley Hall C250 at 7pm on April 21. The event is sponsored by the GLBT Resource Center of UC Boulder. If you live near Boulder, please come see me and say hi!

Meanwhile, here are other news from ipdxWIRE Intersex News:
FIRST ANNUAL INTERSEX AWARENESS DAY SET FOR OCTOBER 26
Activists and allies have set the date for the first annual Intersex Day of Awareness. Based upon participant voting at our central planning hub http://www.intersex-awareness-day.org, the historic event will occur on October 26, 2004. This date commemorates the action that took place outside of the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics in Boston on October 26, 1996. On that day, ISNA supporters holding the banner "Hermaphrodites With Attitude" and our allies with the Transexual Menace brought attention to the travesty of intersex genital mutilation. The ensuing media coverage made it difficult for the medical establishment to ignore the growing intersex movement. [...]

INTERSEX WEBSITE IN FRENCH LANGUAGE LAUNCHED
Curtis Hinkle of South Carolina and André Fiset of Québec founded Organisation Internationale des Intersexués, an international organization and a website for des intersexués francophones. To make the website happen, Hinkle and Fiset went so far as contacting the expert at Magill University specialized in coining new terms not yet in existence in French language in order to translate some materials. The brand-new website is hosted by Kindred Spirit, and already contains several articles, mostly translated from English; Hinkle says that he will be translating some of Intersex Initiative's documents as well. [...]

RELIGIOUS RIGHT PICKS NEW ENEMY: INTERSEX PEOPLE
Prompted by the widely read intersex article in TIME magazine (March 1, 2004 issue), the right-wing Traditional Values Coalition issued a news alert attacking intersex activists. Strangely, though, TVC seems to have no clue as to what intersex activists are actually working toward, despite the fact they have browsed the web long and hard enough to find and criticize a report co-authored by Intersex Initiative director Emi three years ago.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY PRESS PUBLISHES ALICE DREGER'S BOOK ON CONJOINED TWINS
Alice Dreger, the author/editor of two books on the history and ethics of intersex medical treatment, has a promising new book out from Harvard University Press. In "One Of Us: Conjoined Twins and the Future of Normal," Dreger discusses experiences of people born conjoined with her or his twins and the social and medical compulsion to enforce normalcy. [...]

THE JOURNAL NEWS REPORTS JANET GREEN'S PRESENTATION
March 22 issue of The Journal News, the leading newspaper for New York's Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, has an article about intersex based on a presentation Janet Green recently gave at the Volunteer Counseling Service Community Change Project. Green is a co-founder and former executive director of Bodies Like Ours. The story is basic, and as Green says, "they got it mostly right." We are happy because our web URL is listed along with those of BLO and ISNA.
CELEBRATE MARRIAGE EQUALITY IN PORTLAND
Today, March 3, 2004 has been a historic day for fellow Portlanders: Multnomah County (which includes Portland and surrounding areas) began issuing marriage certificates to same-sex couples today at 10am. We are extremely proud to be part of the community that is at the forefront of the struggle for equal rights for all. Thank you, County Commissioners Serena Cruz, Lisa Naito, Diane Linn, and others who have worked to make this happen. Congratulations to all those who have been waiting for this, and to all peace-loving, justice-seeking citizens of Portland! [...]

CREIGHTON AND LIAO CALL FOR "CASE-BY-CASE EXPLORATION" IN BJU INTERNATIONAL
Sarah Creighton and Lih-Mei Liao of the University College London Hospitals wrote a new report titled "Changing attitudes to sex assignment in intersex" in the March 2004 issue of BJU International. While acknowledging that drawing participants from intersex condition support groups for recent follow-up studies may have contributed to the data denouncing cosmetic genital surgeries on children, Creighton and Liao argue that "surgeons may not be able to suspend for much longer the reality of the challenges posed by different groups and continue their usual practice unabated."
