Help Plan the "Intersex Awareness Day" for 2004 and Beyond
Calling All Intersex Activists, Supporters, and Friends: Help Plan the "Intersex Awareness Day" for 2004 and Beyond! We are forming a consortium to create an annual day of grass-roots action to end shame, secrecy and unwanted genital cosmetic surgeries on intersex children, and we want your input! We are hoping to create a "day of action" similar to Take Back the Night, National Coming Out Day, or International Women's Day in that it will focus on grass-roots action organized by local activists. The event will be national-perhaps even international in scope-but will be marked, celebrated, witnessed, and honored in different ways by diverse groups.
The "day" does not belong to any particular group, but it is for all of us who are concerned about the treatment of intersex children in our society. Through the consortium, we will come up with the name, the date, and the mission statement for the event, within which local organizers are encouraged to put on creative activities that will raise awareness of intersex issues.
This is the perfect opportunity for people concerned about intersex issues to get involved! The consortium is open to everyone, and communicates via an electronic mailing list. To join the discussion or read previous comments, visit http://www.intersex-awareness-day.org/
This project is endorsed (but not controlled) jointly by Bodies Like Ours, Intersex Initiative, and Intersex Society of North America.

SUNY SEXOLOGIST DEFENDS JOHN MONEY, ATTACKS ISNA
In the latest (August 2003) issue of Journal of Sex Research, Vern Bullough of the State University of New York profiles the life and work of John Money, calling him "one of the great pioneers of American sexology in the last part of the 20th century" who should "be included in the pantheon of pioneer researchers." In his glowing praise of Money's contribution to sexology, Bullough oversimplifies the position taken by intersex activists, who are critical of the surgery-centered "treatment" of intersexuality that Money advocated...

NEW RESEARCH SHOWS DAMAGES CAUSED BY FEMINIZING GENITOPLASTY
August 1 edition of Ob.Gyn News reports the new finding by Dr. Sarah Creighton and her colleague Dr. Naomi Crouch regarding the risk feminizing genitoplasty (practiced to "correct" naturally large clitoris) presents to one's clitoral sensation. In this pilot review of six women aged between 17 and 31 who have had their clitoris surgically altered, all of them exhibited below-average sexual sensation in objective evaluation (using a machine to measure physical response)...

PRENATAL DIAGNOSIS AND ABORTION OF PARTIAL MIXED GONADAL DYSGENESIS
A group of physicians from Modena, Italy published a case report about the early prenatal diagnosis of 46XY partial gonadal dysgenesis in the recent issue of Prenatal Diagnosis. The case involves a pregnant woman whose first son had partial mixed gonadal dysgenesis, who came in to test her fetus for the recurrence of the same condition. Combining sonography and karyotype testing, doctors determined the female genital structure, 46XY karyotype, and disturbed functioning of testes indicating that the fetus, like his/her brother, has partial mixed gonadal dysgenesis. Doctors proposed the parents that the child be raised as a girl, explaining that "it is possible to treat with appropriate means and to enable a good quality of life," but the parents chose to terminate the pregnancy.

ISNA CLARIFIES ITS ROLE IN RESEARCH PROJECTS
Intersex Society of North America (ISNA) announced today that it will be working with "university researchers to develop a research plan for quality of life studies" for people with intersex conditions. "For too long, scientists and doctors have studied intersex without the active and informed involvement of people with intersex," says Thea Hillman, the board chair of ISNA. "It's time for those with the greatest stake--people with intersex--to be able to help design research that meets our needs."
