Hello friends of Intersex Initiative (ipdx),
Whew. So now the class at PSU is over and I'm back working full-time at Intersex Initiative. I've been having discussions with our core volunteers and advisors about the (near) future of ipdx. Some of the things we are talking about are:
- We need to start thinking about fundraising, because Emi's speaking honorariums (which funds the organization now) aren't stable or promising as the primary source of income. Possibly drag show or other benefit performances?
- This November, three of us (Emi, Tara and J) will be attending Creating Change, the largest LGBT conference in the country. How can we make a huge impact at the conference?
- We're doing a training for the Outside In, the fabulous non-profit organization providing medical and other services to low-income people and homeless youth. While they are not going to provide intersex-specific treatments, we hope that we can make Outside In a safe clinic for intersex people to go for regular medical care, since many intersex people feel (rightfully) afraid of any medical setting.
- State of Oregon began mandating newborn screening for congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), the most common cause of intersex. How can we provide information and support to the parents of children diagnosed with CAH?
- We want to penetrate into Oregon Health & Science University, which we estimate handles about 20 intersex cases per year. Do you know any OHSU student who might be sympathetic?
These are some of the things we are thinking about. As always, we are looking for volunteers who can help with any of these projects!
