SF Bay Area "I Exist: Mani's Story" - Mani Bruce Mitchell at SF Public Library
Intersex activist Mani Bruce Mitchell from New Zealand will be visiting the U.S. this fall! On October 2, there will be a screening of the groundbreaking documentary film, "Mani's Story," which was produced and aired last year in New Zealand. The event is hosted by Carol Queen and held at the San Francisco Public Library in the Koret Auditorium from 2-4pm, with the reception following it in the Latino Community Room from 4-5pm.
SF Bay Area American Academy of Pediatrics 2004 National Conference
American Academy of Pediatrics holds its 2004 annual conference this October 9-13 in San Francisco (i.e. the town we have lots of supporters in). Wanna get together and do some (peaceful and educational) action? Plot with us.
California Urologist Lectures on Changes in Intersex Medical Treatment
Dr. John Park will present "Revisions in Thinking on Treatment for Intersex Disorders at Birth by a Pediatric Urologist" at the National Perinatal Association meeting in San Diego, California, on Thursday, October 14, 2004, 4:15-6:00 pm. Dr. Park is on the medical advisory board of the Intersex Society of North America.
Midwest IAD Columbus: Intersex Film at Ohio State University
GLBT Student Services of Ohio State University is showing the film "Is It a Boy or a Girl?" and having a discussion afterward on October 20. New York IAD Albany: Film "Mani's Story" Screening

Northeast CARES CAH Conference

Midwest IAD Ann Arbor: Film "Is It a Boy or a Girl?"

New York IAD New York: Betsy Driver at NYU, Panel at LGBT Center
Bodies Like Ours is sponsoring two events in New York City honoring the first annual Intersex Awareness Day.
First, Betsy Driver will be speaking at NYU on October 26th. The event is sponsored by the NYU LGBT Student Association and will take place at 7pm in Room 803 at the Kimmel Student Center. See their website for more information.

National Happy Intersex Awareness Day!
Intersex Awareness Day is the (inter)national day of grass-roots action to end shame, secrecy and unwanted genital cosmetic surgeries on intersex children. We intend to create a "day of action" similar to Take Back the Night, National Coming Out Day, or International Women's Day in that it will focus on grass-roots activism organized by local activists. SF Bay Area Thea Hillman to Perform at UCSF In Honor of IAD
Intersex activist and ISNA board member Thea Hillman is doing a speaking/performance at University of California, San Francisco in honor of the first annual Intersex Awareness Day. The event is held at Nursing building room 217, 513 Parnassus St. from 5:30-6:30pm.
South IAD Atlanta: Intersex Workshop by Caitlin Childs
Caitlin Childs of QueerBodies.org will be hosting a workshop on intersex issues on Wednesday Ocotober 27th, 2004 at Charis Books and More. The workshop will start at at 7:30pm. This workshop will include a basic introduction to intersex issues and activism, including Caitlin's personal story of being intersexed. There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions. Pacific Northwest Intersex Film Night at Portland State University
In celebration of the first annual Intersex Awareness Day, Portland-based advocacy group Intersex Initiative will host the "Intersex Film Night" at the Portland State University on this coming October 28. The event will be held at Room 290 of the Smith Memorial Union from 7-9pm, and is open and free to everyone.
"Intersex" refers to medical conditions in which internal or external reproductive organs that do not fit into the medical standard of normalcy. Since 1993, people born with intersex conditions have organized to end shame, secrecy and unwanted cosmetic genital surgeries that are imposed on intersex children. Intersex Awareness Day commemorates the first public demonstration held by intersex activists outside of a medical conference back in 1996, and is honored on or around October 26th across the world.
Here is the program for the night:
"Hermaphrodites Speak!" (1996). The first-ever documentary by and about intersex individuals that started it all. Filmed at the historic retreat for adults who grew up with intersex conditions, in which participants share their stories with each other--and with viewers--for the first time. 30 min.
"XXXY" (2000). Short yet highly emotional film in which two intersex individuals discuss their experiences of growing up with shame, secrecy and unwanted surgeries. 12 min.

"Mani's Story" (2003). A powerful documentary from New Zealand that follows intersex activist Mani Mitchell's journey to meet her U.S. counterparts as she shares recollections from her life history of treacherous early childhood to self-acceptance and reconciliation. 60 min.
"Born Queer: dear doctors" (2003). A spoken word piece that deals with issues of identity, survival and self-representation juxtaposed with the montage footage from a porn shoot involving the artist and others. 5 min.
The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Women's Studies at Portland State University.

Janet Green and Nina Williams, PhD will present the workshop "Intersex in the 21st Century" during the third annual LGBT conference of the National Association of Social Workers, New Jersey chapter, on October 30. More information can be found at the conference website.
